THREE POEMS BY BLUE BIRD
Tr. by Mo Xiaoyu

Make an appointment with me
By Blue Bird
You sent me a letter with a stamp on it
to make an appointment to meet me. You blamed me by saying
it’s been almost a year since I disappeared from friends’ sights.
For the sake of this letter, it took 4 days to travel less than 25 miles,
I promised you to meet, but I stayed in the house the whole time,
and did not keep my promise.
That was a midsummer invitation,
I waited until late autumn before I agreed,
I am sorry I neglected you.
Frankly, I was waiting,
waiting for wild white, pale red, pink and yellow roses
blossom along roadsides, beside fields, in hills and among bushes.
I waited from midsummer to late autumn because
I wanted to revisit her resistance to shade, cold, and barrenness,
— the virtues of my lifelong pursuit.
There is a park near my house,
a creek flow by,
I don’t have to speak, the sound of the stream will tell you what I think.
Come by, and remember
bring a bunch of wild roses. We don’t talk,
let the roses listen to the crooning of the creek.

Waking and sleeping are all dreams
By Blue Bird
You cast your shadow
on the clouds
A short poem,
I wrote for those who enjoyed a little drink,
chanting like wind chimes at a midsummer night,
inviting the most beautiful and charming you.
You didn’t smoke or drink, but you inadvertently bumped into
the wetland of poetry.
The stars are like you, so is the moon. Your
moonlike
untamed
otherworldly
eyes
pierced my dreamless brain. From then on,
when I closed my eyes,
you were like a colorful fish,
swimming from the Dnieper River into my dreamland,
stirring up my calm mind for many years, and
giving me the long-lost spirit of a fluttering white cloud.
Because of you,
I fell asleep quietly reciting Xu Zhimo’s poems every night,
doting on what God has given me,
just like he pampered his love.
However,
I also had the same worries as Xu Zhimo–
the memory of a fish lasts only 7 seconds. After the 7 seconds,
it doesn’t remember the past,
and everything becomes new again.
Heraclitus said,
One cannot step into the same river twice.
Cratylus said,
Men can
not even once
step into
the same river.
How could I choose, once or twice-
a dream of continuity or a dream refreshed every 7 seconds?

Why put away the wind chimes?
Reed-like snow-white feather floats in the blue sky,
the sound of the wind chimes is like music diffused far and wide,
the blinding wind and sand tell me
put away the wind chimes during the season when fallen leaves return to their roots.
Put away
the memories swaying in the window,
put away
the clatter of horse hooves passed to me by the poet,
put away
the cold appearance hanging on the face of the wind chimes,
put away
the reluctant smiles swayed by the wind.
The sound of wind chimes in snowstorms
spreading far and wide the turbulent years we have gone through, and echoing
the unbearable imprints the years have carved for us.
In the long-gone old years,
light rain in April held an oil paper umbrella,
bidding farewell to the coldness of March, but
never rescued the discolored magnolia and begonia.
Populus Euphratica stood tall in Gobi in May,
but the sunshine in June still could
not lift its head.
There used to be
blue water of the lake ripples in July,
there used to be
people crowd in the square in August,
there used to be
in September, people with lofty ideals opening the city gates,
there used to be
in October, the fragrance of chrysanthemums and the harvested grains put together in the warehouse.
Now,
from November to next February,
there is obsolete November 7th,
the Puritans and the 90 Native Americans brought by Massassoit gathering together,
celebrating the first Thanksgiving in American history,
the early Christians who wisely transformed the festivals celebrating pagan gods in pagan cultures,
into the day commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ – Christmas and
the New Year’s Day that is celebrated around the world.
There are more oriental elements too-
Spring Festival, Lantern Festival…
they repeatedly come and go year after year.
The east wind no longer blows, but the wind chimes still sing happily,
the frozen snow does not melt, but the reeds’ flowers still bloom.
Wind chimes, why put them away?
Fallen leaves, why return to their roots?
