The prime minister is talking from the Hutt Valley this morning.

Ardern

The prime minister is talking from the Hutt Valley this morning.

Ardern is speaking now, saying booster incredibly important in response to Omicron.

Please go out and get your booster today if you are eligible, Ardern said.
Scenario planning has been carried out from fewer than 1000 cases a day to more than 50,000, Ardern said.
Countries have a range of gaps between boosters – some have six months others four, Ardern said.
We have been aware there are groups who had second doses later in the vaccine rollout, but the decision about the gap until the booster is for medical professionals. Politicians take advice from them, Ardern said.
Omicron is more mild to moderate for most people, and booster will make a difference to ensure we don’t put pressure on the health system, Ardern said. Case numbers in hospital are expected to be larger.
The WHO only notified Omicron as a variant of concern eight weeks ago, Ardern said.
Globally every single country that has had Omicron waves has had extreme pressure on their hospital system. No reason to think NZ would necessarily be an exception, unless we use all the tools we have, Ardern said.
Māori have a huge interest in how people are cared for in their homes, Ardern said. We are engaging with Māori providers about that.
Issues about having a shorter quarantine period is based on data and evidence.
Asked about inflation. NZ not alone in having high rates of inflation. It’s predicated on the global environment, Ardern said. In particular oil prices and international tensions that effect those prices are factors.
Ardern said she refutes suggestions that Government’s high level of spending has been a factor.
Measures at the border will change, but continuing to test at the border will help us know if there are changes in Covid, Ardern said.
Ardern said the Government had “absolutely not” taken the rapid antigen test supply of others.
There’s a huge variation in accuracy of RAT’s, Ardern said.
Last thing we want is individuals in hospital saying they wish they had got the vaccine, Ardern said. Still nearly 40 per cent of people eligible for a booster today who haven’t got one.
Recently she received a paper from experts who have advised us strongly to continue with the opening of schools, and to continue to do what we can to keep children at school during the pandemic, Ardern said.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins said he is focused on keeping children in school.
And that’s the end of the press conference
