All eyes on female astronaut

Wang Yaping, 41, the first female astronaut to visit the Tiangong space station, had a lot to answer on social media about her six-month life in space. But one, in particular, made headlines. What happens when she gets her periods? Pang Zhihao, the national chief science communication expert on space exploration technology, told the CNS news agency that while research has shown that female astronauts will have normal menstruation in space, decompression sickness may restrict them from performing spacewalks during periods. Tianzhou-3, a cargo spacecraft, carried her sanitary supplies and a few non-toxic cosmetics to the space station. “Female astronauts will probably have a better psychological state wearing makeup,” said Pang. What’s more, the space station has even prepared chocolate, desserts and other supplements in the event of heavy blood loss. Other special preparations to ensure her comfort in space include: the seats in the spaceship and in-cabin space suits and even toilet seats have been adjusted for her comfort. “Women have slender hands, so her gloves are tailor-made so that it’s more convenient for her to work with the equipment,” assured Pang. However, Pang noted that the selection process and training for both male and female astronauts are the same because spaceflight missions are arduous. “Astronauts need to meet high physical and emotional standards, so female astronauts will not be exempt from this expectation,” Pang said. According to Pang, many empirical studies have found that female astronauts are well adapted for executing space missions, and in some respects have an advantage over their male counterparts, in qualities such as attention to detail, communication skills, and thinking comprehensively. Furthermore, their metabolism for magnesium and levels of estrogen is higher than that of male astronauts, and with lower iron content, their bodies are more suitable for long-term space life. This precludes them from being prone to side effects like iron poisoning and thrombosis. Pang expects that this expedition will see China’s first spacewalk by a female astronaut. “This is not only an honor for us, but is also an opportunity for us to research the various advantages that female astronauts have when walking outside of the vehicle,” Pang said. “Their generally smaller size is an advantage as they’ll be able to control their body better and thus perform a wider variety of tasks.”

Astronauts dock on Tiangong space station

Three Chinese astronauts began their six-month mission on China’s first permanent space station on Saturday, after successfully docking aboard their spacecraft. The astronauts, two men and a woman, were seen floating around the module before speaking via a livestreamed video. The new crew includes Wang Yaping, 41, who is the first Chinese woman to board the Tiangong space station, and is expected to become China’s first female spacewalker. “We’ll co-operate with each other, carefully conduct maneuvers, and try to accomplish all tasks successfully in this round of exploration of the universe,” said Wang in the video. After successfully stationing in China’s space station core module Tianhe, the Shenzhou-13 crew opened the hatch of the Tianzhou-3 cargo craft and entered it at 9:50am, the China Manned Space Agency said yesterday. Tianzhou-3, launched on September 20, carries nearly 6 tons of goods and materials, including living supplies for the astronauts, one extravehicular spacesuit for back-up, supplies for extravehicular activities, space station platform materials, payloads and propellants. The crew will also open the hatch of the Tianzhou-2 cargo craft. They will carry out cargo transfer and other related work as planned. The space travelers’ Shenzhou-13 spacecraft was launched by a Long March-2F rocket at 12:23am on Saturday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China’s Gobi Desert, and docked with the Tianhe core module of the space station at 6:56am. The three astronauts entered the station’s core module at about 10am, the CMSA said. They are the second crew to move into China’s Tiangong space station, which was launched last April. The first crew stayed for three months. This time’s six-month stay will set a new record for China’s crewed space mission duration. The crew includes two veterans of space travel — Zhai Zhigang, 55, and Wang. The third member, Ye Guangfu, 41, is making his first trip to space. The mission will test key technologies for assembly and construction of China’s space station, such as module transfer supported by the robotic arm and manual remote operation, Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, said earlier. The astronauts will perform two or three spacewalks during the mission to install the dual-arm connector, the device to link the big and small mechanical arms, as well as the suspension device, Lin said. The mission will further verify the health, living and working support technologies for astronauts’ six-month stay in orbit, he said. The astronauts will also carry out sci-tech experiments and applications in fields such as space medicine and micro-gravity physics, as well as diversified public science education activities, he said. It will be physically and psychologically challenging to work and live in a zero-gravity environment for six months, Lin said, adding that the astronauts will have in-orbit exercises and mental health support to help them stay at their best. The ground team will optimize their menu and provide psychological support based on the monthly assessment of the astronauts’ status, said Lin. The mission has special designs against debris and other space objects, for instance, reinforced structures against tiny debris and evasive maneuvers against larger debris and other objects. Shenzhou-13 is the second of four crewed missions needed to complete the space station by the end of 2022. After the crew returns to Earth in April, China plans to deploy six more missions, including deliveries of the second and third space station modules and two final crewed missions.

‘Guardians’ recall saga of migrating elephants

Zhang Sijie, 33, a fireman with the Yunnan Forest Fire Brigade, came face-to-face with an elephant this year. Zhang and fellow officers were tasked with monitoring and guarding a herd of elephants that had left rainforests in Yunnan Province and were migrating northwards. Previously he had only seen elephants on TV. But in Gaoliangdi Village in Kunming’s Jinning District, he came across one only 10 meters away. “For about 10 seconds, I could clearly see its face, the wrinkles on its skin and even the eyelashes,” Zhang told Shanghai Daily. “I held my breath and the only sound I could hear was my heartbeat. After the elephant judged that I wouldn’t cause any hurt, it left.” Many people who care about wild animals will remember that some months ago, a herd of wild elephants made a long trek northward from rainforest to urban areas in Yunnan with Kunming their destination. The elephants and their “guardians” in Yunnan became a focus of the whole world. This week, the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) in Kunming opened with the debut of a short documentary “Elephants’ Journey in Yunnan.” The documentary explains how the number of wild elephants has doubled in the past three decades in Yunnan, and how the Yunnanese co-exist with them. During the Leaders’ Summit of the COP15, President Xi Jinping said in keynote speech delivered via video link that the story of the northward travel and return of the elephants shows the vivid results of China’s endeavor to protect wild animals. On the night of May 24, a group of “unexpected guests” arrived at Eshan County in central Yunnan. A herd of Asian elephants, which lives in the tropical rainforests of southern Yunnan, left its habitat in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and marched northward toward populated countryside. On their journey, a baby elephant was born, and two elephants returned home halfway. Sometimes the herd entered villagers and stopped by villagers’ houses for food. Since the wild elephants are sensitive and could attack, the Yunnan government set up a response team to track the herd day and night and evacuate residents to ensure the safety of both humans and elephants. However, keeping an eye on an elephant herd is hard work. Yang Xiangyu, 31, also from the Yunnan Forest Fire Brigade, recalled that he was dispatched to Eshan on May 27. “At that time, I thought it would just be an emergency task to locate the elephant herd, and we could be back within a week,” he told Shanghai Daily. “But later I came to know that it’s a tough job and would take a long time.” None of the firemen left the team and were all very willing to protect both the elephants and the people along their track, said Yang. “We are used to monitoring forest fires and where the fire will spread,” Yang said. “How it will develop can be judged by factors like the terrain and the intensity of fire. “But we’ve never monitored wild living animals. Where the elephants would go and how the journey would unfold was uncertain for us.” So they had to study the behavior of Asian elephants from experts and then judged the possible route based on the distribution of land, water sources and mountains. From the practice, they’ve collected lots of experience on how to monitor the herd. Their monitoring work lasted for 116 days, which tracked the herd for nearly 1,300 kilometers, covering 10 districts in four cities. Sometimes it could be really difficult. The elephants usually sleep in the day and move at night so the firemen had their busiest work in the night hours, which required them to keep a clear mind. The firemen could only sleep for three or four hours a day, and once a team had to keep up its monitoring work for as long as 26 hours straight.

Warships’ Strait trip draws flak

The Chinese military yesterday condemned the United States and Canada for each sending a warship through the Taiwan Strait last week, saying they were threatening peace and stability in the region. The US military said the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Dewey sailed through the narrow waterway that separates Taiwan Island from China’s mainland along with Canadian frigate HMCS Winnipeg on Thursday and Friday. The People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command said its forces tracked the ships and “stood guard” throughout their passage. “The United States and Canada colluded to provoke and stir up trouble … seriously jeopardizing peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait,” it said. “Taiwan is part of Chinese territory. Theater forces always maintain a high level of alert and resolutely counter all threats and provocations.”

‘Beaver Princess’ lives like a Disney character surrounded by wildlife

BEFORE heading to Kunming, Yunnan Province, and stepping on stage, Chu Wenwen practiced her speech for this week’s UN Biodiversity Conference opening plenary many times. She did so in front of the lairs of beavers which she has protected for nearly four years. This species of beaver (officially the Sino-Mongolian beaver Castor fiber birulai) lives in the Ulungur watershed in China and Mongolia. In China, their only habitat is in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where Chu, 27, lives. After graduating from Beijing Forestry University in 2017, Chu returned home the following year and initiated the “Beavers’ Canteen” program which calls on people to donate their “money for snacks” to help plant a species of shrub that is an important food resource for the beaver. “During the past four years, there have been more than 1 million post-1990s people joining our natural conservation campaign for the Altai Mountains in Xinjiang. We got together through Douyin (Chinese version of TikTok) and planted 410,000 saplings of that shrub,” she said proudly at the meeting. “We made 190 households of herdsmen be natural conservation ‘patrol guards’ and established the nation’s first professional wild animal rescue center in the Altai Mountains,” she added. “We helped to raise the number of beaver lairs from 162 to 190, increasing this first-class state-protected animal population by 20 percent.” Known as the “Beaver Princess,” Chu lives a life similar to a Disney character, surrounded and liked by wild animals. Chu’s childhood was different from her peers. She was introduced to the wild at the age of 2 by her father who is an animal conservationist and often needed to do investigations and researches. So when the other children were reciting ancient Chinese poems, mathematical formulas and English alphabet, Chu was working hard to remember the names of different animals and plants. When she was 7 years old, her father gave her a single lens reflex camera as a gift to observe and record the life of wild animals. She developed a love for the creatures and how humans could coexist harmoniously with them. So instead of being a white-collar worker in Beijing after graduation, she decided to return home and follow her father’s footsteps. In her hometown of Altay, there are 466 species of wild animals and 74 state-protected ones living in the surrounding 110,000 square kilometers. In 2018, she founded the Altai Natural Conservation Association which is dedicated to animal protection. The first public participation project she initiated was for the beaver. At the rescue center, there are dozens of animal species, including both birds of prey and beasts. “We took this beaver as a priority because it’s listed as a first-class state-protected animal and was greatly endangered,” Chu told Shanghai Daily. This animal, which feeds on the shrub that grows near the rivers, has a strong sense of territory and won’t leave their own surroundings. So if people destroy the river and the water levels decline, the beavers’ living environment will be destroyed and they will no longer survive. “The beavers, which can build dams, are dubbed as ‘engineers’ in the animal kingdom. Their dams can change water levels, gather shoals of fish, attract birds to nest and bring insects and small mammals,” Chu explained. “So every beaver’s dam can provide a new ecosystem for wild animals and lift the biodiversity levels in the area.” Chu said it’s common to see the beavers injured or dead after a fight in the Ulungur River. “They have very strict requirements about habitats and only choose for their home an area with abundant food resources,” said Chu. “However, the availability of the shrub keeps decreasing. The lack of food and habitat is the major cause impacting the beavers’ reproduction.” The shrub is also the building material of beavers. The clever animal makes full use of it — it eats the bark and uses the inner part to build dams and lairs. Chu considered planting shrubs for the beavers but found that might cost more than 2 million yuan (US$310,814). Her association is completely non-profit and could not afford such an outlay. To raise the money, she turned to the Internet for help. She opened a Douyin account and posted videos showing how she rescued wild animals. She also livestreamed the life of beavers and let netizens know how the beavers ate the shrub she planted with their support. Through her efforts, many people contacted her and asked what they could do to help the wild animals. Then came another program, the Beavers’ Ark, a hospital that Chu established for injured wild animals and for which the beavers are frequent patients. Earlier this year, Chu received a call from the police, saying they had received a “big eagle” and wanted to bring it to her rescue center. When they arrived, she recognized the bird as a vulture, a second-class state-protected animal, and that it had been poisoned. It’s very hard to cure a poisoned bird of prey. The possibility is like that of winning a 1-million-yuan lottery because the bird’s metabolism enables the toxin to attack all its cells and organs at a speed that is faster than an antidote treatment. Prior to receiving the vulture, Chu had witnessed more than 20 poisoned birds of prey and none of them survived. A demoiselle crane which took pesticide by mistake died in front of her. Given the urgency of the vulture’s condition and need for treatment, and the rescue center being full of animals, the bird was treated in Chu’s restroom with a large mat as the operating table. Chu and her colleagues gave it detoxification injections every four hours. After the third day, the vulture stood and began thrashing about in the restroom. It looked into the mirror, damaged the mats, broke Chu’s cosmetics with its beak and never let anyone use the toilet. The whole progress was recorded on camera and posted on Douyin. After it fully recovered, Chu took it to the mountains and released it, hoping it would never return. So far, Chu has rescued more than 60 state-protected animals, including a snow leopard, fox, lynx and golden eagle. She worries that the treated wild animals will start to gain affection for humans, a dangerous outcome. When she was a little girl, Chu’s father told her never to approach wild animals and said that anything in nature should never been interfered with by humans. Her first sight of the body of an animal hit by a car alerted her to the fact that animals which accidentally encounter the human world might get injured. For instance, herdsmen set up wire fences around their meadows. And when some birds of grey dive to catch a rat, they could be hurt or trapped. Chu once saved an Eastern imperial eagle whose wing was snared by such fencing. The wound was so serious she had to cut off the wing, leaving the bird to be raised in an aviary and never flying again. She also saw the remains of antelopes caught in the fences, their bodies devoured by other animals and only the skulls and some fur left behind. Chu has done a lot to educate people to keep their distance from the wild animals. In the Kalamaili Nature Reserve, Chu once found a wolf which died after eating the body of a sheep with poison secreted inside. The herdsmen had inserted the poison to kill the wolves and protect their sheep flocks. But other predators, like snow leopards and foxes, would also feast on the poisoned carcass. As the sheep in the Altai are free-range, Chu assumed that other herdsmen would follow the same practice to protect their sheep. So she analyzed wolves’ feces and found they mainly ate rats, plants and insects rather than sheep, although there was evidence they would sometimes feast on dead sheep. She then helped the herdsmen learn more about the wild animals’ behavior and started to compensate them for losses. “I think the best protection for the animals is getting a balance. People here live a life by growing crops and grazing, and the wild animals also have their own ways of life,” said Chu. “It’s better to work out a solution which can allow the people and wild animals to coexist,” she said. “As a youth representative to the Biodiversity Conference, I feel that in the past, the post-1990s generation is often considered as a group of people who are not mature enough. But now, with the joint effort of more than 1 million of them, we achieved results which are recognized by the nation,” Chu told Shanghai Daily. “We think we are on the right track and what we have done is meaningful. We will continue to encourage more people, especially the youth, to participate in nature conservation.”
