A little Chinese girl with albinism who received a warm welcome from her classmates and teachers on her first day of school has touched millions of people in mainland China. The girl's mother, surnamed Sang, from Bozhou city in Anhui province, eastern China, said she was relieved when she saw her daughter getting along with her kindergarten classmates and teachers, reported. Sang was initially worried her daughter would be sidelined or discriminated against due to her albinism. When Sang arrived to pick her daughter up after school on Wednesday (Sept 21) she saw the girl with two other children and her teacher in the playground and decided to observe their interaction before approaching. She then saw the teacher bend down with a big smile and start talking to her daughter and watched as the group interacted casually with each other, with no one treating her daughter differently. • Beijing bus drivers told to wear wristbands to monitor their emotions
by Salina Li on September 26, 2022 at 3:49 am

Beijing's long-distance bus drivers have been told to wear electronic wristbands that use emotion-sensing technology to monitor their state of mind. The move was initiated by the state-run Beijing Public Transport Holding Group, which says it is aimed at protecting public safety. But legal experts have raised privacy concerns and say the wristbands could cause bus drivers undue distress and potentially lead to discrimination. Some 1,800 wristbands were distributed to bus drivers on cross-province and highway routes on Wednesday, the official Beijing Daily reported. It is unclear how many drivers will be required to wear the devices. The report said they would be used to monitor the drivers' vital signs and emotional state in real time to improve safety. The new requirement was introduced just weeks ahead of the ruling Communist Party's five-yearly congress , to be held in Beijing. Officials across China have been repeatedly told to minimise social risks ahead of and during the gathering. […]

  • Here to stay? China's cityscapes transformed by thousands of Covid-19 test booths
    on September 26, 2022 at 3:23 am

BEIJING - A thousand days since the World Health Organization (WHO) was told of a "viral pneumonia" in central China, many countries have returned to pre-Covid-19 life. Not so China itself - in cities big or small, routine PCR testing is the new normal. On Dec 31, 2019, the WHO's office in China was informed of cases of pneumonia of an unknown cause in the city of Wuhan, in Hubei province. Since then, the virus that is now known as SARS-CoV-2 has evolved into the less virulent Omicron variant, and most of the world has moved on. After Shanghai was locked down in April and May to contain the highly transmissible Omicron strain, regular testing for the virus has become a fact of everyday life to ensure fast detection and quarantine of the infected and close contacts. It's a policy that has been controversial and also a drain on public finances. Tens of thousands of kerbside sampling booths where people can be tested day and night have become a permanent feature of Chinese cityscapes. Proof of a negative PCR test once every few days is required to guarantee access to public venues, places of work and mass transit - even when there is no outbreak. […]

  • Prominent Chinese commentator urges Covid-19 experts to 'speak out'
    on September 26, 2022 at 1:11 am

BEIJING - Prominent Chinese commentator Hu Xijin said on Sunday (Sept 25) that as China ponders its Covid-19 policies, epidemic experts need to speak out and China ought to conduct comprehensive research and make any studies transparent to the public. Hu's unusual call on Chinese social media for candour and transparency earned him 34,000 likes on the popular Twitter-like microblog Weibo, as well as frank responses from netizens in a normally tightly-policed internet quick to censor voices deemed a risk to social stability. China's top leaders warned in May amid the Covid lockdown of Shanghai and widespread restrictions in the Chinese capital Beijing that they would fight any comment or action that distorted, doubted or repudiated the country's Covid policies.  "About the future, China needs very rational research and calculations," said Hu, former editor-in-chief of nationalist state tabloid Global Times. "Experts must speak out, and the country should organise comprehensive studies and make them transparent to the public: what are the pros and cons for our common people, and what are the overall pros and cons for the country?" by Mandy Zuo on September 25, 2022 at 2:30 am

Nicknamed the “human printer” because of his perfect Chinese handwriting, a teacher in central China has attracted hundreds of thousands of followers online and hopes to inspire the younger generations. Zhang Shifeng, who teaches art and calligraphy in Henan province, has also gathered widespread support because his talent is becoming increasingly rare in China . Vast swathes of society primarily communicate digitally, and practising their handwriting is not necessary for most people’s day-to-day life. Zhang, 45, has 560,000 followers and millions of likes on Douyin, China’s TikTok, and he publishes videos that explain how he makes the characters. Zhang writes most of his posts using chalk and a chalkboard, and he tends to pick Chinese proverbs or poems and uses them as a teaching tool. “Whenever I write on the blackboard, the kids see standardised, pretty characters. They become very interested, especially when I use fonts similar to printing fonts. They often say, ‘the printer teacher is coming’,” he said in one of his videos. […]

  • 'Come back to hang out': Internet helps Taiwanese woman track down 300-year-old ancestral homeland in China
by Alice Yan on September 25, 2022 at 2:22 am

For many people, one of life’s great joys is diving into their ancestry and tracking their heritage and history. For a Taiwanese woman who goes by the pseudonym Lailai, she found the village in Fujian province, in southeast China, where her ancestors lived before they migrated to Taiwan over 300 years ago during the Qing dynasty (1644–1912). The woman, who works in Beijing, travelled to Fujian province with her husband to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival recently. Before the trip, Lailai’s father passed along a genealogy book of their family, hoping she could visit their ancestral hometown in the province, the mainland news outlet Xiamen Daily reported. According to the book, the family, with the surname Lai, lived in a place called Shentian Luxi in Pinghe county, a mountainous region in the southern part of Fujian that is around 120km from the ocean. The document said they emigrated to Taiwan during Qing dynasty over 300 years ago. However, Shentian Luxi no longer exists (at least by that name), and is not marked on modern maps. […]

by Liya Su on September 25, 2022 at 1:32 am

The decision by a PhD student in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang to work as a part-time food delivery driver sparked a debate in the country about accepting jobs deemed “beneath” a perceived social status. Meng Wei, who studies at Zhejiang University, said he does not feel sorry for himself because the food delivery job allows him to support his family while continuing his dream of earning a doctoral degree, Zhengguan Video reported. Meng took the job partly because he had been pursuing a PhD for a long time, having started the journey in 2014. Meng became depressed when he failed his first dissertation attempt but decided not to give up. Meng shares a video of the food he needed to deliver.
