Most red areas will move to orange ahead of new years

Auckland will move to Orange at 11.59pm Thursday December 30.

Remaining areas currently in red, excluding Northland, will also move to Orange at the same time. This includes: Taupō and Rotorua Lakes Districts, Kawerau, Whakatane, Ōpōtiki Districts, Gisborne District, Wairoa District, and Rangitikei, Whanganui and Ruapehu Districts.

There are no other changes. The South Island is remaining in Orange for now as well.

This gives Auckland two more cycle periods.

Today’s post-Cabinet press conference will be particularly interesting for Aucklanders wanting to know whether they’ll still be in the red setting for Christmas.

Cabinet meet today for its first review of the traffic light system, Ardern says. It considered a range of factors today, including vaccination rates.

There is “cautious optimism” in Auckland due to the lower cases we’re seeing in the region. This is good news “for all of us”, Ardern says ahead of the border opening.

There are currently 61 people in hospital, with 4 in ICU/ HDU. The R rate slowed to under 1 for the first time in months by December 1, she said.

There is good cause for optimism but we only moved into the traffic light system 10 days ago, Ardern said.

The next review of the traffic light system will occur during the week of January 17.

Omicron
There will be a check-in regarding this new variant in early January, Ardern said, to make sure they are following the latest advice concerning this variant.

She’s now opened up the news conference to media questions.

Northland
There is a gap of a few thousand regarding vaccination targets in Northland. They expect it to move to orange eventually, but not just yet.
It makes sense to be “most cautious” in the area where we have low vaccination rates, Ardern said.

On police checkpoints and compliance
Checkpoints can only be legally run by the NZ Police. Police ultimately are the ones in charge and must be present for compliance checks, Ardern says in response to questions about checkpoints during the summer period.
The only place where they’ve set expectations around compliance is around southern and northern Auckland, Ardern says.

Ardern repeated that they are being cautious with Northland, which is why it’s staying at red under the traffic light system for now.

Boosters

The vast bulk of eligible New Zealanders due for their boosters are due for them around about the March/ April mark.

Bloomfield says the Pfizer vaccine does have a good level of efficiency around the omicron variant. It’s the winter period they’re mindful of in terms of having people as protected as possible as we go into winter in 2022.

There will be further advice provided this week on the topic of boosters, Bloomfield says. The technical team are meeting to go over advice on this within the next few says.

Every country is responding to omicron and we’re one of the countries that have had to do the least in comparison in this space.

Ardern said it’s her view that they have a duty to review all the evidence and have a check-in on this variant.

The system is designed to allow some flexibility at every level, including at orange, Ardern said.

Businesses can be fully operating in terms of capacity as long as they use vaccine passes, she added.

Question about the Taliban

Ardern said she’d seen the recent media reports on the topic. She wouldn’t comment specifically on an individual or on the specifics of the media reporting.

We have legislative framework in place as well as international obligations, Ardern said speaking generally.
