毛利人是新西兰(Aotearoa)最早的居民,大约1000年前从玻利尼西亚来到新西兰,以“伊威”(部落)为基础建立了繁荣的社会,传衍了数百年。毛利人原来没有文字,以口头传承为主,毛利文化艺术以毛利神话,传统故事为基础,建立了毛利社会的仪式,信仰和世界观。反映在艺术上以纹身,毛利战舞,传统木雕,毛利玉雕,编织等民间艺术为主,形成了毛利艺术的精华。
19世纪西方文明通过大航海时代进入了新西兰,基督教传教士发明了毛利语的书写形式。因此,许多毛利神话,传统故事得以保存。毛利文化艺术在新西兰得到了保护,发展和传播,形成了毛利文化艺术的完整体系。但是,由于东西方文明与文化的认知差距和历史原因,毛利艺术只是保留了传统的内容,缺乏创新。
在21世纪的今天,新西兰进入了新的时代。移民的多元化带来了多样化文化,多民族的融合,现代的文明意识的提升,互联网的发达,使毛利文化,艺术能够完全融入到当今世界的艺术之中。可以在全球范围内传播,展现多元化的毛利传统艺术和当代艺术。
此次“当代与传统”毛利艺术展是奥克兰国际艺术空间对毛利文化,艺术进行串联,梳理的一次有意义的尝试。我们在了解毛利传统艺术的同时,将毛利当代艺术进行升华与提升。此次艺术展参展的当代艺术家都是新西兰当代艺术领域的佼佼者,Lissy和Rudi将传统的毛利神话用毛线编织的技法形成了当代化和艳俗画的表现,相当夺人眼球。Jimmy James Kouratoras将毛利神话的tiki赋予了更多的生命,爱情,友谊的主题。Jamie Boynton将毛利神话中“人与自然”,人类祖先的来源与传承用艺术语言进行了炫示。Todd Couper的毛利木雕作品,对毛利艺术的传统的题材使用当代艺术的技法进行了创新。
其他几位毛利当代艺术家也以各自独特的创造力和想象力,使毛利当代艺术的群体实力得到了彰显。来自毛利故乡罗托鲁瓦的木雕,毛利玉雕,编织艺术,将毛利传统艺术的精华呈现给大众。中国的东方文化与毛利文化在传承,语系,神话,人种方面都有天然的联系和渊源。
在新西兰多元文化多民族的大家庭中,中国人和毛利人具有的天然联系,将会使两个种族更好地相互了解,相互沟通,相互交流,进而将毛利文化与艺术推向中国,介绍到东方文化圈的大家庭中。主办方期待以此次展览为契机将“当代与传统”毛利艺术发扬光大,推向世界。

Known for his attention to detail and fine application of tools and technology, Jamie Boynton actively draws upon his indigenous roots as a foundation for creativity and innovation. He formally studied at Design School in Wellington, Aotearoa/New Zealand (BDes 1996). Jamie has received many awards from a career that spans nearly thirty years and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary Māori artists.

Specialist pounamu (jade) carver, Niki Nepia, is famed for both his traditional art forms and contemporary work. Fluent in traditional Maori style, Niki has studied, worked and exhibited in China under various master carvers and is accomplished in different Chinese art forms. His designs are influenced by the natural surroundings of the Urewera Ranges, in the heart of the North Island, where he grew up. Puawai, meaning “blossom” or “flower”, was the name chosen for the business, to capture the transformation from raw stone to beautiful taonga.
